0% VAT: the biggest upfront saving

Since April 2022, the UK government has applied a 0% VAT rate to energy-saving materials including solar panels, battery storage, and heat pumps. For a typical £6,000–£8,000 solar installation, this saves £1,000–£2,500 compared to the standard 20% rate. The relief is scheduled to end on 31 March 2027—after which VAT reverts to 20%. MCS-certified installers automatically apply the 0% rate at point of sale; no separate application is needed.

Home Energy Scotland Grant

Scotland offers the most generous UK solar grants. The Home Energy Scotland Grant provides up to £6,000 for solar photovoltaic (PV) systems with battery storage, plus up to £2,500 for heat pumps. The grant is means-tested in some cases, with higher amounts available for rural and island households. Applications go through Home Energy Scotland's online portal, and the installer must be MCS-certified.

ECO4: support for low-income households

The Energy Company Obligation (ECO4) requires larger energy suppliers to fund energy efficiency improvements for low-income and fuel-poor households. Solar PV is one of the eligible measures under ECO4's 'innovation' pathway. Eligibility depends on receipt of certain benefits (Universal Credit, Pension Credit, Child Benefit with income thresholds) and property EPC rating. Contact your energy supplier or a registered ECO installer to check eligibility.

Can I combine multiple schemes?

Generally yes. The 0% VAT applies to all residential solar installations regardless of other funding. The Home Energy Scotland Grant can be combined with the 0% VAT rate. ECO4 cannot be combined with Home Energy Scotland (different regions). SEG is separate—it pays for exported electricity after installation regardless of how the system was funded. Always check with your installer and the scheme administrator before committing.

Frequently Asked Questions
