Why sizing matters more than brand in Australia
A correctly sized 2.5 kW reverse-cycle unit from a mid-range brand will outperform an oversized 5 kW unit from a premium brand every time. Comfort, efficiency, and equipment life all depend on getting the size right for both cooling and heating loads. The Australian rule of thumb — roughly 0.15 kW per square metre in moderate climates — is a starting point that ignores ceiling height, insulation, window area, orientation, and local climate extremes. In Brisbane, the dominant load is cooling; in Canberra or Tasmania, the heating load may be more demanding. A proper heat load calculation considers both summer design temperature (42°C in inland QLD, 35°C in Sydney) and winter design temperature (as low as -5°C in the ACT and TAS).
