A useful monthly EV estimate starts with driving, not battery size. Divide monthly miles by miles per kWh (typically 3-4 miles/kWh for an efficient UK EV), adjust for 5-15% charging losses, then multiply by the electricity rate. A driver using 300 kWh per month pays about £74 at 24.67p/kWh before losses, but the same driving pattern can cost much less on an off-peak tariff (7.5-10p/kWh) — as low as £22-30 per month.

Home charging share is the swing factor

The cheapest EV scenario is usually predictable overnight charging at home on an off-peak tariff. The expensive scenario is relying on public DC fast charging as the default. Treat public charging as its own line item in the calculator, because it can narrow or erase the fuel-cost gap.
